I have the honor to report to
you, for the information of His Excellency

Governor, that on the 15th instant I examined Mr. Ronald and Mr. Holmes as to the progress they
are making in the study of Chinese.
Neither of them was prepared to be examined in the characters or in reading.
Mr. Ronald said he had not had a teacher for many months. Mr. Holmes also has been without one for a shorter time; and he said he had had but little leisure to employ
